About the notarial process
What does a notary public do?
A notary verifies identity, assesses willingness and awareness, and completes the requested notarial act when requirements are met. A notary is an impartial public official, not an attorney.
Can you tell me what form or certificate I need?
No. Choosing a certificate or explaining legal effect can be legal advice. Ask the document recipient, preparer, or an attorney what is required.
Can you prepare or explain my legal document?
No. GriffinQ does not draft documents, select forms, or provide legal advice.
Why might a notary decline?
Identity may be insufficient, the signer may not appear willing or aware, the document may be incomplete, or the requested act may not be permitted.
Identification and signing
What identification should I bring?
Bring an original, current government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The name should reasonably match the document.
Should I sign before the appointment?
Usually no, if your signature must be witnessed or sworn. Complete the document except for signatures that must be made during the appointment.
Do I need witnesses?
Some documents require witnesses in addition to notarization. The recipient or attorney should tell you. Arrange eligible witnesses before the appointment.
What if the signer cannot physically sign?
Please mention it before scheduling. Illinois requirements for a signature by mark or other accommodations can involve additional steps.

Where do you travel?
We serve Chicago, the South Suburbs, and Western Suburbs. Reasonably reachable surrounding locations may be available depending on travel time and scheduling.
Can you come to hospitals or nursing homes?
Yes, subject to facility access rules, signer condition, and notarial requirements. Share the facility, access details, and requested time when you call.
Do you provide detention-facility signings?
Potentially. These require advance coordination and are subject to facility rules, scheduling, and eligibility requirements.
Do you offer after-hours service?
After-hours appointments may be available for an additional fee. Call to discuss the time, location, and appointment details.
Documents and special services
Can you notarize estate, trust, or power-of-attorney documents?
We can provide a notarial appointment for properly prepared documents when all requirements are met. We cannot determine whether a document is correct or legally effective.
Can you certify copies?
Illinois rules and document types affect whether a copy certification is available. Many records must be certified by the issuing agency.
Can you help with an apostille?
We can provide administrative assistance with the authentication process, but the issuing authority decides whether to issue an apostille or authentication.
Can you do I-9 verification?
We may assist as an authorized representative when the employer’s instructions permit it. GriffinQ does not provide immigration advice.
